The Acidification of Our Oceans PDF Print E-mail

Our entire planet is under attack from the byproducts of our industrial revolution.

Let's focus on our oceans and the problems caused by rising CO2 levels.

Ocean acidification is the result of atmospheric carbon dioxide being absorbed by the salt water of our oceans, forming carbonic acid. This carbonic acid dissolves calcium carbonate, which is the building block for crustaceans, mollusks, coral and other marine life. Coral reefs are habitats to many species. If our coral reefs die, so will the marine species that live there.

Another concern is acidosis. This is the build up of carbonic acid in the body fluids of all marine species. It inhibits growth, respiration and reproduction. Growth, respiration, and reproduction are all primary functions in species survival.

Viability and habitat are being disrupted by ocean acidification, pollution, global warming, and overfishing. Rising sea levels and temperatures  are also affecting the health of our oceans, also.

Acidification also has an impact on our food chain.  Whatever is in the ocean, is in the fish that we eat.

We have the knowledge and technology to heal our oceans. Clean renewable energy is the answer. Reducing CO2 emissions and proper disposal of toxic waste are the first steps to a healthier planet.
