Washington, D.C.—The Sierra Club today launched a new online calculator to help consumers better understand the environmental and economic benefits of making the right vehicle purchasing decisions under the federal government's new Car Allowance Rebate System (also known as "cash for clunkers").
The Club also named Fuel Economy All-Stars in each class of vehicles in order to highlight the best choices for consumers. The Cash for Clunkers online guide can be found at www.sierraclub.org/clunkers.
"Our online guide can help consumers choose a vehicle that gives a boost to both the economy and our environment," said Ann Mesnikoff, Director of Sierra Club’s Green Transportation Campaign. "Choosing the right new vehicle will save money at the pump, cut dependence on oil, reduce carbon emissions, and help the auto industry."
The cash for clunkers calculator included in the online guide is a simple tool to help consumers compare the fuel savings and emissions reductions benefits of various new models. Consumers simply input the fuel economy of their current vehicle, the fuel economy of the new model and the number of miles they drive each year. The calculator then provides annual savings on gas (in both dollars and gallons) and the annual reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

The CARS program was officially launched today by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. Between now and October 1, 2009, the program will provide $1 billion in consumers vouchers of $3500 or $4500 to encourage the purchase of new vehicles. A detailed explanation of the program and its requirements are also included in the Sierra Club online guide.
