Sierra Club Joins with the Obama Family and Members of Congress
to Support Children of Military Families

Washington, D.C.--Sierra Club is proud to join the Obama family and members of Congress in a "United We Serve" event to benefit the children of military families.  United We Serve is President Obama's summer service initiative, which kicked off on June 22nd. Sierra Club volunteers will participate in United We Serve today by joining the First Family and other volunteers in stuffing Frisbees and other items into 15,000 gift backpacks that will be donated to military children attending "Operation Purple" outdoor summer-camps around the country.

"We are proud to work with the Obama administration and members of Congress to help support military families," said Carl Pope, Sierra Club Executive Director.

The Sierra Club's Military Families Outdoors program helps ensure that those military families making sacrifices for our country have the opportunity to benefit from the healing powers of our natural heritage. This summer, 10,000 military children will receive a free week of Operation Purple Camp. This widely-acclaimed Sierra Club program gives military children the chance enjoy the carefree fun of summer camp while learning to cope with the stress of having a mother or father away from home for long periods, often in a war zone. At Operation Purple camps, children bond with other children who understand what they are going through, and gain confidence as stewards of their communities and the environment.

For today's event, volunteers from the Sierra Club and the National Military Family Association will join members of Congress and their families to create the gift backpacks. The backpacks include Frisbees provided by the Sierra Club, along with a letter from the President and First Lady thanking the children for their support of their parents' military service.
